The Free University of San Francisco (FUSF)was founded by Alan Kaufman and began with an organizing meeting on December 19, 2010.[1] Alan Kaufman gave opening remarks.[2] Over fifty people attended the first meeting.[3] A second planning meeting was held on January 9, 2011,[4] and additional organizing meetings were held on January 16 and 30, 2011.[5]
The group plans a free "teach-in" to take place on February 5 through 8, 2011.[5] On Saturday, February 5, Matt Gonzalez plans to lecture on Fundamentals of the Law; Alan Kaufman plans to teach a class on Avant Garde innovators Jack Kerouac, Thelonious Monk, and Jackson Pollock; Diane Di Prima plans to lecture on Vision and the Visionary Poet; Bobby Coleman, co-founder of the Revolutionary Poets Brigade, will present "Labor History and the Great Strike of 1934;" and Local Hero Diamond Dave Whitaker[6] and Dr. Lapin will present "Reading Between the Lines of the New York Times."[5]
On Sunday,February 6, Berkeley University Bookstore partner Marin Holden and photographer Sharon Beals will present "Restoring San Francisco's Urban Wildlands," V. Vale and underground photographer Charles Gatewood will discuss RE/Search Publications, including "Modern Primitives" and "Modern Pagans;" and David Cobb will present "Abolishing Corporate Personhood to Create Authentic Democracy."[5]
On Monday night, February 7, Susan Shin Hee Park will present "Marx from Modernity to Postmodernity," and John Smalley will present "Spirit of Dada." On Tuesday night, February 8, Jordan Bohall and Elena Granik will present "Critical Thinking (Introduction to Logic)" and Evan Karp and Andrew Paul Nelson will present "Introduction to Nietzche." [5]
FUSF will have no tuition, will pay no salaries, and will not accept monetary donations.[7] It does have a website[8] and a Facebook page.[9]
